Bill Belichick Sounds Off On Key Patriots Player Underperforming

The 2023 NFL season has been a terrible one for the New England Patriots, and things only got worse on Sunday during their loss to the New York Giants.

With six seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Patriots trailed the Giants by a score of 10-7, but New England had a chance to tie the score at 10 when rookie kicker Chad Ryland lined up for a 35-yard field-goal attempt.

To add to the Patriots’ current season of misery, however, Ryland missed the kick, and the team suffered their ninth loss of the 2023 campaign.

On Monday, New England head coach Bill Belichick didn’t hold back when commenting about Ryland’s miss during an appearance on WEEI radio (via The Greg Hill Show on Twitter).

“Chad is a very talented player but this is two weeks in a row that we basically missed extra points. It’s not good enough.”

Belichick called Ryland’s performance on Sunday “not good enough,” but to be fair, the head coach has no one to blame but himself since he is also the team’s general manager, and he made the choice to select the kicker in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft earlier this year.

At the same time, an NFL kicker should be able to knock down a 35-yard field-goal attempt almost every single time.

A little later in the day, we saw Philadelphia Eagles kicker Jake Elliott convert a 59-yard field-goal attempt in the pouring rain to send his game to overtime against the Buffalo Bills.

All Ryland had to do was make a kick that was roughly half of that distance to tie up the game for the Patriots.

But he was unable to do that, and if his struggles continue, no one will be surprised if New England decides to move on sooner than later.
