Patriots OC Says Mac Jones Doesn’t Deserve To Be Blamed

Not many analysts expected great things from the New England Patriots this season.

But even if that was the case, they’ve been fairly disappointing.

Their defense has had some ups and downs, but their offense has been among the worst in the league.

Needless to say, that has made Mac Jones an easy scapegoat, and he hasn’t played well at all.

Nonetheless, OC Bill O’Brien recently stated that people shouldn’t point the finger at the quarterback (via Michael Hurley).

Bill O’Brien on Mac Jones: “Things haven’t gone great for him this year. I don’t think that he’s the No. 1 guy to blame. If you want to blame anyone, blame me. I’m the one who designs it, and it’s not going very well.” pic.twitter.com/11LA8mdPZb

O’Brien claimed that he should be the one getting the blame right now, as he’s the one designing the plays, and he’s not doing a good job.

Truth be told, that’s a fair assessment.

The Patriots offense has been poorly designed and the play-calling has been repetitive, predictable, and outdated.

On top of that, they simply do not have the right personnel to compete at the highest level, and that’s not on Jones.

Jones showed glimpses of great play in his first year, but he’s regressed vastly without Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator.

It’ll take a lot of moves to fix the Patriots offense, and we can all agree that Jones won’t be there next season.

He could and should still get another opportunity somewhere else, and chances are that he could still be a serviceable quarterback in this league.

But he was never set up for success in New England, at least not this season, and the reality is that Bill Belichick and Bill O’Brien have failed him.
