The Miami Heat have some promising young players like Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Nikola Jovic, but they’ve also been known for taking good care of their veterans.
With that in mind, Eric Koreen of The Athletic wonders whether Kyle Lowry could be next in line to play into his 40s.
In a recent report, Koreen states that Lowry has actually expressed a desire to stay in the league until he’s at least 40, meaning he’d need to play for an additional two seasons (via Dru).
“[Lowry] wants to keep playing as long as he can fill an important role. Can Lowry be the next NBAer to play into his 40s? It would require him to play 2 more full seasons after this one. Lowry’s next contract will depend on what he does in the playoffs”- @ekoreen of @TheAthletic https://t.co/syUbsXMlRd pic.twitter.com/mjjjf5rC1a

The report also says that Lowry’s next contract will most likely depend on what he does in the postseason, as he’s going to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Needless to say, Lowry’s not going to be a starter, as he’s failed to live up to the major contract he got as soon as he arrived in South Beach.
Nonetheless, he could be a serviceable veteran and mentor at a fair price.
The Miami Heat agreed to keep Udonis Haslem on their payroll despite barely playing him for the better part of the last decade, and culture and leadership matter to them.
Lowry is by no means the All-Star point guard he once was, and he’s missed plenty of time with ailments.
But if he can find a way to contribute to the team and not be a financial burden, then it wouldn’t be shocking to see him stay in the league for an extra couple of years or even further.
