All NBA players have extra gear in them, something they turn on every now and then when they need that extra ounce of motivation.

Russell Westbrook might be the only exception to that rule, as he’s always going at full speed and putting his body on the line every time he sets foot on the court, even if it’s just a preseason game.

Unsurprisingly, nothing motivates a person like money, which is why the league had no choice but to offer a $500,000 prize to each player from the winning team of the NBA’s In-Season Tournament.

Even LeBron James, who’s one of the wealthiest athletes and most successful businessman on Earth, recently admitted that he’s not too old to take charges when half a million dollars is at stake (via Lakers Nation).

Reporter to LeBron: “Aren’t you a little old to be taking charges in December?”

LeBron: “Not for that $500K I ain’t.”

On one hand, the In-Season Tournament has been a major win for the league and the viewers.

The players have bought in, and the games have been very exciting, more than what we’re used to watching in early December.

On the other hand, the fact that the league had to offer millionaire players more money to do their jobs is concerning.

There should be no bigger motivation than playing in the NBA, the single-greatest basketball tournament on Earth, and a league where just a handful of people have left their mark.

Then again, $500,000 is a lot of money, even for LeBron James, so at least the league did a great job of finding out what makes the player’s tick.

Hopefully, they’ll keep that intensity up once the tournament is done, but that doesn’t seem very likely.
