The New England Patriots know that they’ll need to address the quarterback position either in free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft as the position has been severely underwhelming during the 2023 NFL season.

The Patriots have been one of the worst teams in the league this year, and that’s largely in part because of their glaring weakness at the most important position on the field.

New England entered the season hoping for a bounce-back year for Mac Jones, but he found himself getting benched on multiple occasions after several disappointing performances.

Head coach Bill Belichick finally made the decision that most expected when he sat Jones in favor of Bailey Zappe.

Zappe got the start in Week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and led the Patriots to an improbable victory.

It was a huge success for Zappe, though he later quipped he didn’t have any family or friends in attendance because of his meager contract via CBS.

“I don’t want to pay for those tickets…I’m still on a rookie contract,” Zappe said.

It’s a funny response from a player who was being candid about him not wanting to spend too much at this point in his career.

Zappe was taken in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and by virtue of his draft position he did not make nearly as much as those were taken earlier.

Regardless, his loved ones must have been cheering and rooting for him while they were at home.

Zappe seems like he’s locked into the starting job the rest of the way, but he’s definitely not the long-term answer at quarterback for New England.
