The Cleveland Browns have had one of the best defenses in the NFL recently thanks, in part, to their dominant secondary.

With five weeks left in the regular season, Cleveland locked down one of their starting defensive backs to ensure continuity on defense for next season.

The Browns reportedly reached an agreement with safety Grant Delpit on a three-year, $36 million extension Sunday morning, according to 247 Sports, Brad Stainbrook (via Ari Meirov).

The $12 million average annual salary is tied for the 12th-highest among safeties in the NFL, per Over the Cap, with Arizona Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson.

Delpit’s $23 million in guaranteed money ranks fifth, though, ahead of the Chicago Bears’ Eddie Jackson and the Seattle Seahawks’ Jamal Adams, per OTC.

The 25-year-old safety is in his third season with the team after the Browns drafted him No. 44 overall in the 2020 draft out of LSU.

He’s had a solid career thus far, with six interceptions, 245 combined tackles, 41 defended passes, and 1.5 sacks in 44 games.

Delpit has formed a lockdown secondary in Cleveland with fellow safety Juan Thornhill and cornerbacks Denzel Ward, Greg Newsome II, and Martin Emerson Jr.

The Browns, meanwhile, have the No. 1 passing defense in the NFL and have allowed just 1,841 passing yards through 12 games this season.

The 13 passing touchdowns they’ve allowed is fifth in the NFL.

Delpit has been a big part of that – he’s allowed just 9.5 yards per competition, 6.9 yards per target and only one touchdown this year.

Now, he’ll be a part of the Browns’ secondary for the foreseeable future.
