The 2023 NFL season has been a forgettable one for the Los Angeles Chargers, as this talented team led by one of the best quarterbacks in the league has failed to live up to expectations once again.
As if losing four out of their last five games wasn’t bad enough for the Chargers, Los Angeles appears to be on the verge of potentially losing superstar quarterback Justin Herbert for the rest of the 2023 campaign.
Herbert suffered a fractured right index finger in the loss to the division-rival Denver Broncos on Sunday, resulting in the 25-year-old having to undergo surgery.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the outcome of the surgery will determine whether Herbert will return or shut it down for the rest of the season.

With the Chargers sporting a losing record of 5-8 and seemingly going nowhere the rest of the way, it would be safe to assume that Herbert will likely not play another game this season because the risk is unnecessary with the team not having much of a chance of being playoff-bound at this point.
If Herbert is indeed done for the season, the one-time Pro Bowler threw for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while completing 65.1% of his passes and finishing with a QBR of 63.8 (5th in the NFL).
Even though potentially losing Herbert for the rest of the season is major news for the Chargers, the big question moving forward is whether Los Angeles is finally ready to move on from head coach Brandon Staley, which will be the biggest storyline for this team heading into the NFL offseason.
