The New England Patriots are careening towards their worst season in the Bill Belichick era.
At 3-10, New England has already been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and has a real shot at finishing the season with a top-two draft pick.
There have been rumors all year about Belichick’s job security, and a recent report speculated the Patriots have already decided to part ways with their coach after the season ends.
Firing Belichick would be a mistake, according to former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman, because of the expectations it would create for whoever takes over for the legendary Patriots coach.
“If they fire Bill Belichick right now, they will be walking into an era of instability, uncertainty, and anxiety that they have not dealt with in three decades,” Sherman said Tuesday on “Undisputed.”

Before 2022, Belichick had just one losing season with the Patriots: His first year as head coach in 2000 when New England finished 5-11.
Since then, the Patriots have had 20 winning seasons in 21 years that included nine Super Bowl appearances and six Super Bowl wins.
No coach has or could replicate that type of success in the two decades Belichick coached in New England, so his replacement would already be under incredible scrutiny from ownership and fans.
This is a tough situation for the team, though, because they’ve been bad in Belichick’s past three seasons without Tom Brady.
He hasn’t been able to really win without Brady, and New England will likely look at drafting a quarterback in the first round for the second time in three seasons.
Belichick’s time might be up, but it’ll come at a price for the Patriots.
