The San Antonio Spurs were undoubtedly one of the worst teams in the NBA last season, otherwise, they wouldn’t have ended up with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

However, upon selecting Victor Wembanyama with that pick, many expected the Spurs to miraculously turn their fortunes around in the 2023-24 NBA season.

Now, Wembanyama is a great talent, but even he needs a couple of years of experience playing in the NBA to actually make an impact on the team.

Keeping that in mind, the Spurs are currently the worst team in the Western Conference, with a 3-20 record.

Despite the year-long struggles, Wembanyama mentioned that he is focusing on the long-term goal of turning the Spurs into a winning franchise, as revealed via Legion Hoops on Twitter.

“Of course, I hate losing. But I stay focused on the long-term goal,” Wembanyama said.

“The good thing is nobody doubts that in the long run we’ll be the winners… Of course, I hate losing. But I stay focused on the long-term goal.”

It’s good that Wembanyama is not losing morale despite being on an 18-game losing streak this season.

The Spurs’ embarrassing losing streak is only second to the Detroit Pistons, who are on a league-worst 21-game losing streak right now.

Wembanyama did mention that he hates losing, just like any other player with the caliber to become a superstar in the NBA, but there is only so much one player can do on the floor.

Wembanyama is currently averaging 19.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game for the Spurs.

On top of that, he is leading rookies in scoring the most 20-point games this season.

But despite all the effort from Wembanyama, the Spurs have the worst record in the Western Conference.
