This week, former NFL star quarterback Cam Newton ruffled quite a few feathers when he said a number of prominent quarterbacks in the league now, including Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott, are merely “game managers” who don’t elevate their teams.

Many have criticized Newton for that statement, and it likely isn’t a true statement, given that Purdy and Prescott are among the league leaders in multiple categories and are currently the two clear frontrunners for the regular season MVP award.

But some have also personally attacked Newton as a result, saying that he somehow isn’t qualified to give his opinion on the matter.

Robert Griffin III, another talented former QB, defended Newton the man by saying Newton has earned the right to give his opinion.

Cam Newton is a Heisman Trophy Winner, Rookie of the Year, NFL
MVP who led his team to the Super Bowl and the 1st QB EVER with 30k pass yards and 5k rush yards. It’s fair game to agree or disagree with his opinions, but don’t discredit the man. @CameronNewton earned the right. https://t.co/b6ivLJ2koX

Not too long ago, Newton, the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft, was a top-flight signal-caller, and in 2015 he won the MVP award while carrying the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl.

Purdy, the sensational young QB for the San Francisco 49ers who was the last player chosen in last year’s draft, has been derided as merely a “game manager” who is only putting up strong numbers because he has lots of talent and a great offensive mind in head coach Kyle Shanahan around him.

Yet Purdy is tops in passer rating, pass completion percentage, and yards per pass attempt, and he’s second in passing touchdowns and third in passing yards.

Prescott is the league leader in passing touchdowns and tied with Purdy for the NFL’s lead in QBR.

These men have guided their teams to five-game winning streaks, and perhaps Purdy’s squad will meet Prescott’s Dallas Cowboys in this season’s NFC Championship Game.
