The Washington Commanders made the decision to stick with veteran QB Jacoby Brissett over Sam Howell.
This wasn’t much of a surprise, as Howell struggled mightily vs. the New York Jets, and Brissett almost led the team to a 30-point comeback.
When asked about that, Howell claimed that as disappointed as he is in the situation, all he can do is just continue to try and get better, stay ready, and learn as much as he can from Brissett.
“It is what it is. At the end of the day, I just gotta play better,” Howell said.
Needless to say, this situation has put him in a tough spot for the future.
There is a lot of uncertainty in Washington, and there could be some major changes from top to bottom.
From the front office to HC Ron Rivera, no one might be safe under this new administration, and that also includes Howell.
The jury was still out on him after some ups and downs in his first season as a full starter, as he alternated some impressive play with games in which he didn’t even look like an NFL quarterback.
To say that he won’t get another shot in the league could be inaccurate and unfair.
But with the Commanders looking forward to getting back to Super Bowl contention almost right away, it’s hard to envision them sticking with him for much longer, if at all.
As for Brissett, he’ll get a couple of weeks to audition for another job and prove that he’s still far from done and can be a very serviceable player in this league.
