This is Peyton Watson’s second season in the NBA and with the Denver Nuggets and he is getting a lot more time on the court.

In his first season, Watson averaged 8.1 minutes per game, but he’s playing for 17.2 minutes this year.

On Thursday night, Watson was a crucial part of the Nuggets’ massive 142-105 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Nuggets celebrated Watson’s 20-point, 5-rebound, and 2-assist performance on Twitter, and Watson commented on it.

“the work is working! great win, back at it tmr night at Ball!!” he said on Twitter with a #MileHighBaby hashtag.

Watson has been gaining more trust from head coach Mike Malone and it’s easy to see why.

He is averaging 6.3 points and 2.5 rebounds so far in 2023-24 and has become a reliable sixth man.

But on Thursday, he was part of the team’s starting five, filling a void that was left by the ailing Aaron Gordon.

Watson’s game would have been impressive under any conditions but it was even more stirring because he was scoring against Jaren Jackson Jr. of the Grizzlies, who is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

Perhaps Jackson didn’t have faith in the young player and that’s why he didn’t guard him as much as he should have, but Watson took full advantage of that.

Although the Nuggets are mostly known for players like Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Gordon, and a few others, the team has a deep roster and Watson is a testament to that.

Gordon may be out for a while so Watson could get even more chances to show off as he did on Thursday.
