On Wednesday came the news that the Denver Broncos had decided to bench starting quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of Jarrett Stidham.

This news came after the Broncos’ stunning loss to the woeful New England Patriots by three points in Week 16 which dropped their record to 7-8.

Wilson reportedly expects Denver to cut him once the season concludes, but he also says that earlier this season, the team told him he’d be benched if he didn’t defer an injury guarantee on his contract, per Jordan Schultz.

Russell Wilson confirms that the #Broncos threatened to bench him on October 31 if he didn’t defer his $37M injury guarantee:

“We beat the #Chiefs. They came up to me during the bye week … and they told me that if I didn’t change my contract – my injury guarantee – that I’d be… https://t.co/WZ1NMt4uXD pic.twitter.com/dVqCpgeMlC

Schultz reports that Wilson getting benched now is a decision that was made for financial reasons.

Wilson didn’t play too badly versus New England, going 25 of 37 and throwing for 238 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

As opposed to last season, when he had by far the worst season of his career, Wilson has been playing rather well this season, as he has 3,070 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and a 66.4 percent completion rate.

Still, many have felt trading for him prior to last season was a big mistake, but because of what Denver gave up to get him and because Denver just hasn’t had enough weapons around him to make a Super Bowl run.

If they do indeed cut him after the end of this season, it would be tantamount to them admitting that they indeed made a big mistake by acquiring him in the first place.

The Broncos surrendered five draft picks, tight end Noah Fant, defensive end Shelby Harris, and quarterback Drew Lock to the Seattle Seahawks to get Wilson.

One of those draft picks turned into Devon Witherspoon, who is considered the best rookie cornerback in the NFL right now.
