With the 2023 NFL season officially over for the New York Jets and the storied franchise being knocked out of playoff contention recently, it appears that one of their biggest signings in NFL free agency during the offseason wants to move on.
After the team acquired superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers during the offseason, the team made a surprising move by signing four-time Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook to help bolster the run game.
Initially, this seemed like a brilliant move, with Rodgers willing to sacrifice a good chunk of the money he was set to make in order for the team to bring in another Pro-Bowl-caliber player like Cook.
With the Jets already in planning for the future, Cook wanted to salvage an opportunity to potentially win a Super Bowl title this season, as he wanted to be released in order to sign with a title contender.
As a result of Cook’s desire to move on after a lackluster season with the Jets, he became another failed experiment for the team that had title hopes coming into the 2023 campaign, which came at a hefty price, considering the lack of production.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini broke down exactly how much it cost the Jets per touch for them to bring on Cook this season.
“The Jets paid Dalvin Cook a total of $6.7 million. That breaks down to $81,426 per “touch” (67 rushes + 15 catches). Another free-agent signing that didn’t work out,” Cimini wrote.

Clearly, Cook didn’t work out in New York and will hope to land with another team with a chance to win a title this season.
As for the Jets, it’s back to the drawing board for head coach Robert Saleh and company, as the team will be under tremendous pressure to fix it’s problems during the NFL offseason and compete for a title in 2024.
