Ricky Rubio’s time in the NBA has officially come to an end.
On Thursday morning, it was reported that Rubio and the Cleveland Cavaliers had agreed to a contract buyout.
Only a few hours later, Rubio took to Twitter to post a lengthy and heartfelt message to fans, confirming that he was retiring from the league.
The message touched upon an incident that happened this summer, when Rubio’s “mind went to a dark place” and forced him to take a step back from the league to focus on his mental health.
He then said he was retiring and reminisced about joining the league back in June 2009.
Rubio said that he has plenty of great memories and thanked the teams and the people he played for and with.
He gave special attention to the Cavaliers, the last team he played for and a group that has been “extremely respectful and understanding” of Rubio’s situation.

Rubio joined the NBA back in 2009, selected as the fifth overall draft pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
After playing for the Timberwolves, Rubio then moved to the Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, back to the Timberwolves, then finally the Cavaliers.
His career average will be 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.4 assists.
He was known for his fast mind and quick feet and his ability to find his teammates on the floor.
Over the last few seasons, Rubio hadn’t played as much because of his age and injuries.
His recent mental health problems caused him to step away from the game entirely and now he will not come back.
Rubio had a long career that he should be proud of, no matter how abruptly it ended.
Fans of the Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Jazz, and Suns will always hold a special place in their hearts for the enthusiastic and talented guard.
