It’s been a roller coaster of a career in the NFL for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Carson Wentz.
On Sunday, Wentz will get the opportunity to start under center for a team for the first time since Week 17 of the 2022 season when he was a member of the Washington Commanders.
Now, with the Rams, the veteran quarterback will have a number of people rooting for him on Sunday, including former NFL head coach Jon Gruden.
Recently, Gruden spoke to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo and shared his reaction to Wentz landing with Los Angeles this season (via Mike Garafolo on Twitter).
“I’m excited the Rams were the team [who signed Wentz]. I wanted him to go to a place that had a good infrastructure and where the offense jibes with his skill set. It’s a great place for him.”
While Carson Wentz waited for his next opportunity, he looked to Jon Gruden, who worked with the former No. 2 overall pick. Wentz has been in the league since 2016, when he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the second overall pick in the 2016 draft.
Coincidentally, the Rams had the first selection in the 2016 draft, and instead of using it on Wentz, they went with quarterback Jared Goff instead.
More than a handful of years later, Wentz has wound up on Los Angeles’ roster anyway.
His career in the NFL certainly hasn’t gone as well as he or others were hoping when he was drafted in 2016.
After an underwhelming five seasons with the Eagles, Wentz spent the 2021 campaign with the Indianapolis Colts, and then in 2022, he started seven games for the Commanders.
Heading into Sunday’s game, the veteran quarterback has completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 22,129 yards, 151 touchdowns, and 66 interceptions in 94 appearances during his NFL career.
He’ll get a chance to add to those numbers this weekend when he makes his first start for the Rams in their 2023 regular-season finale against the NFC West champion San Francisco 49ers.
