The New England Patriots are entering uncharted territory.
For the first time in over two decades, they will be in the market for a new head coach.
Or will they?
For years, some have speculated that former LB Jerod Mayo would take the reins from his former coach and mentor.
Now, Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston reports that, even though he cannot say anything is official until it actually happens, all signs point toward Mayo being Belichick’s successor.
“The indications that I’ve gotten is that Jerod Mayo will be the successor to Bill [Belichick],” Curran said.

This wouldn’t be much of a surprise.
Robert Kraft made sure to keep Jerod Mayo in Foxboro when other teams wanted to interview him for a HC position, giving him a bigger contract and more responsibilities within the coaching staff.
Mayo himself admitted his desire to become a head coach at some point in his career, and he didn’t hide his intention of doing so in New England, stating that he was quite thankful to the organization and the city for everything they’ve done for him and his family over the years.
Of course, hiring Mayo would give the Patriots some sort of continuity, although one wonders whether Robert Kraft would want that after watching the ‘Patriots Way’ fail in the past couple of years.
Also, perhaps that was the original plan, but now that Mike Vrabel, who also knows the Patriots Way firsthand, has become available, perhaps the Krafts would want to take some more time before jumping to conclusions or making any rash decisions.
For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
