The New York Yankees have scanned the pitching market since the offseason started.

They were very much in the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes, but their $300 million offer fell short.

They remain very interested in Jordan Montgomery, but they may get the feeling he prefers to return to the Texas Rangers.

They inquired about Blake Snell, but recently ended up signing Marcus Stroman instead.

If money wasn’t a factor, Snell would probably be a Yankee by now.

However, it is; and the star left-hander, who just won his second Cy Young award, is still looking for something close to $200 million.

With the Yanks signing Stroman (career 3.65 ERA, 3.95 in 2023), they are virtually out on Snell according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.

It is ‘unlikely’ that the Yankees sign Blake Snell after signing Marcus Stroman, per @JonHeyman,” B/R Walk-Off tweeted.

Note that Heyman didn’t say it was impossible.

However, it virtually is: now, after bringing in Stroman, the Yanks could still look at the lower tier of pitchers unless Snell dramatically lowers his demands.

The Yankees, with Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, have too many resources tied to their pitching rotation and would probably prefer to shop at the bargain section for their next reinforcement.

The Yanks reportedly offered something close to $150 million over six years, but the pitcher held out for more money or for a sixth season.

New York could still add another pitcher from this point until the start of the 2024 campaign.

It’s highly unlikely, almost impossible, that the name of that pitcher is Blake Snell.
