After a week off, the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Round but got more than they expected as they found themselves trailing in the second half.

The Packers’ game plan on both sides of the ball was sound and put the 49ers on the ropes.

However, San Francisco lucked out when Green Bay kicker Anders Carlson missed a 41-yard field goal attempt that would’ve put them up 24-17.

Instead, the 49ers rallied back and scored a touchdown that would eventually secure them a 24-21 win and a ticket to the NFC Championship game.

It wasn’t the typical winning formula that head coach Kyle Shanahan is used to using, but the results played out in his favor.

However, John Middlekauff said it was the worst-coached game he’s seen from Shanahan since he became San Francisco’s head coach via The Volume.

“This is easily … one of the worst games I’ve ever seen (Shanahan) coach,” Middlekauff said.

Middlekauff notes that the game was much closer than it needed to be given the weapons and talents the 49ers possess, but it also underscores the job that Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and his players did.

While Shanahan had some questionable calls during the evening, Green Bay executed well and kept things close throughout.

Fans might not be feeling as confident about their Super Bowl chances after barely escaping the Packers, but playoff football is often unpredictable.

At this time of the year, wins are all that matters and Shanahan now gets to turn his attention to next week when they’ll play either the Detroit Lions or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
