After letting go of head coach Ron Rivera, the Washington Commanders are in the market for his replacement and have several candidates worth pursuing.
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has been considered the favorite to land the position given the job he’s done so far, but people like Bill Belichick also loom as a possibility.
However, teams have also been more mindful about hiring from within their own ranks and Washington’s got a worthwhile candidate in offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Bieniemy left the Kansas City Chiefs to call plays for the Commanders and he did well considering the weapons at his disposal.
After a year of experience in Washington, Bieniemy seems poised to take the next step in his coaching career.
While the Commanders may be interviewing other candidates it seems that Bieniemy made quite the impression with the brass via Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.
“The #Commanders interviewed assistant HC/OC Eric Bieniemy for their HC position this week, sources tell @BleacherReport. The meeting included owner Josh Harris, new GM Adam Peters and Bieniemy, who I’m told had an “excellent” and “highly detailed” approach,” Schultz reported.

Bieniemy is well-regarded for his offensive creativity and should have the inside track on the head coaching job because of his familiarity with the other members of the staff and the players.
Although a decision doesn’t seem imminent, it feels like Bieniemy gave team owner Josh Harris and general manager Adam Peters something to seriously ponder.
Bieniemy would make for a solid hire, though Washington will still be evaluating options carefully.
