The Tennessee Titans were the second team to make a head coach hiring this offseason after they brought in Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan to lead their rebuilding efforts alongside general manager Ran Carthon.
It was a curious move, only because of the other qualified candidates on the market and questions about Callahan’s role in running the Bengals offense under head coach Zac Taylor, an offensive-minded coach himself.
Callahan’s resume isn’t as impressive, either, and Fox Sports analyst Skip Bayless argued that Callahan’s experience as a longtime assistant wouldn’t necessarily help him understand the nuances of being a head coach.
“I don’t know how any assistant head coach is prepared to be a head coach,” Bayless said. “I don’t know how he’s qualified.”

As Bayless said in the above video, the Titans wanted to bring in a coach who was more “collaborative” than Mike Vrabel.
Callahan has also been a part of rebuilding teams in the past and would understand the perspective of starting from the ground up more than a coach who wants to start winning immediately.
Either way, what the Titans look like under Callahan will be an interesting storyline for a team that hasn’t looked good for the past two years.
Callahan will get to help shape quarterback Will Levis’ career, but the team around him will otherwise be a work in progress in what is now a very competitive AFC South conference with the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and Jacksonville Jaguars.
