The San Francisco 49ers are back in the NFC Championship Game with second-year quarterback Brock Purdy under center once again

Purdy was an MVP candidate at one point this season, but questions emerged about his ability to lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl after a few inconsistent performances against good defenses.

Despite some shortcomings, former NFL defensive end J.J. Watt told ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” that he respects Purdy because of how he’s been able to command a locker room full of stars.

“The way that locker room has talked about Brock … you have to be a certain type of guy and a certain type of leader and special guy to be able to go into that situation and perform well enough and also have the respect of your teammates and to be able to lead them at times like last game in the last drive,” Watt said. “… I have respect for that as well. That’s not as easy as people think.”

“Don’t discount him as a leader and a guy that they look to in the huddle..

The 49ers are one of the best teams in the NFL after finishing with the No. 1 seed in the NFC, and a lot of that is thanks to the play of Purdy.

The young quarterback led San Francisco to beat the Green Bay Packers late in the divisional round this past week – a feat that not many other players would be able to accomplish in a similar situation.

Purdy will face another tough opponent in the Detroit Lions this week, but his ability to lead the team shouldn’t be diminished after what he’s been able to do this season.
