Many people have wondered why Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs wears the No. 1 on his jersey.

In some ways, it makes a lot of sense because this is his first year in the NBA and he was the first pick in the first round of the NBA Draft last summer.

But speaking with Michelle Beadle on FanDuel TV, Wembanyama gave more insight into why he chose to wear that number.

“There’s no other option but to be number one. I can’t accept to be behind someone in some way,” Wembanyama said.

So far, he is making a case for being the number-one rookie in the league.

He is posting 20.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, shooting 46.5% from the field.

His offensive skills have gotten better but his defensive abilities are already stunning and he is leading the league with 3.2 blocks per game.

Wembanyama is a fairly quiet and modest young man but this statement shows that he really wants to be the best of the best.

His team is currently struggling and it’s very likely they won’t reach the playoffs this year, but most Spurs fans aren’t too bothered by that because they are sure that the future is really bright thanks to Wembanyama.

Yet, many are still asking if he has lived up to all the hype that surrounded him in the lead-up to the draft.

That is up for debate, of course, but no one can deny that Wembanyama is already quite a player and could definitely be a generational talent and future Hall of Famer.

One thing is for sure: he’s off to a tremendous start and somehow still has plenty of room to grow.
