The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished the season with a much better record than fans gave them credit for coming into the season.

They had a quarterback competition in the early days of training camp, as Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask were slated to go head-to-head for the position.

It was quickly made clear that Mayfield would win the job, and once he did, he ran with it.

Despite being an up-and-down year at some points, Mayfield led the Buccaneers to the playoffs and even won a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

After seeing how he played this year, many analysts are calling for the Buccaneers to sign Mayfield to a long-term, high-value contract.

While he might be interested in leading this team moving forward, Mayfield also wants to be careful.

According to a recent conversation with Cam Wolfe via Around The NFL, Mayfield said, “I think they know that we’ve got to know who’s calling plays before anything’s done.”

The Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator, Dave Canales, has moved on to brighter pastures.

He recently took a head coaching gig with the Carolina Panthers, and while this is a great thing for his career, it puts the Buccaneers in a bind.

They are now forced to find a new OC, one that Mayfield hopefully meshes with and can perform well under.

The Buccaneers and Mayfield want to keep this energy and momentum going, but in his mind, the new OC has to make sense.

Yes, he wants to get a large contract extension, but he also wants to make sure the team is in the right space before committing.
