Earlier this year, the New England Patriots finally made the difficult decision to move on from longtime head coach Bill Belichick.
Under Belichick, the Patriots were able to win six Super Bowls in less than two decades, but after the team only won four games in 2023, New England clearly felt it was time to make a head-coaching change this year.
After his departure from the Patriots, many expected Belichick to end up filling one of the other head-coaching vacancies around the NFL this offseason.
To the surprise of some, however, the longtime New England coach wasn’t selected for any of the openings, and he’s probably going to have to wait until 2025 if he wants to continue his coaching career in the NFL.
In the meantime, Belichick posted a heartfelt thank you letter to Patriots fans all over the world in Sunday’s edition of the Boston Globe (via Field Yates on Twitter).

Regardless of how his relationships with New England owner Bob Kraft or former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady ended, Belichick still had the support of the majority of the team’s fan base during most of his tenure with the franchise.
Leading New England to six Super Bowl wins certainly helps him earn some of the benefit of the doubt, but Belichick clearly wanted to make sure the team’s fan base knows how much he has appreciated their support during the last two decades.
Given how short the average tenure of a head coach in the NFL is today, it’s possible that we might never see another head coach in the league remain with his team for as long as Belichick was able to stick around with the Patriots.
