Brock Purdy is about to become the lowest-drafted quarterback to ever start in a Super Bowl, and he is hoping to lead the San Francisco 49ers to their first world championship since the 1994 season.
Yet there are still plenty of people, including analysts, who feel he is nothing more than a “game manager” or “system quarterback” and that any competent signal-caller could’ve done what he has done since taking over the QB1 role in Week 13 of last season.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who himself has had to deal with the media doubting him, stuck up for Purdy, saying that he’s an elite quarterback and a game-changer while on “The Rich Eisen Show.”
“If you’re executing the system to what’s being called… that’s an elite level of quarterback play,” Mayfield said.

During the regular season, Purdy threw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns while completing 69.4 percent of his pass attempts and ranking at or near the top of the NFL in almost every key statistical category.
While he led the 49ers to a 12-5 record and the top seed in the NFC, people doubted if he could come through while trailing in the second half of a game and lead his team to victory.
But that’s exactly what he has done already in the playoffs — twice.
He overcame a seven-point deficit in the divisional round versus the Green Bay Packers, and in the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions, he led San Francisco to a 34-31 win after they trailed by 17 at halftime.
Now, Purdy will have an opportunity to silence his critics, perhaps for good, by manufacturing a win over the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
