Super Bowl LVIII will be on CBS this year, which means play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and color analyst Tony Romo will be on the call for the biggest game of the season between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

But, recently, criticism has come out against Romo’s broadcasts for being too excitable, something CBS Chairman Sean McManus acknowledged on Mad Dog Sports Radio this past week.

“[Romo’s] more of a fan. He gets excited. We sometimes say to him, ‘Hey, calm down a little bit because you do get too into the game,’ which I think is a plus,” McManus said. “But I think, generally speaking, people really enjoy listening to [Jim] Nantz and Romo and Tracy [Wolfson].”

CBS Chairman Sean McManus believes that most of the criticism of Tony Romo is “undeserved” but this game was always going to be an important game for him.

As McManus noted, a lot of the issues people appear to have with Romo are dramatized on social media rather than reflective of reality and the CBS executive said he believes there are more fans of Romo than detractors.

Whether or not that’s the case, Romo’s broadcast demeanor remains a talking point for future NFL broadcasts – and CBS seems aware of it.

This isn’t Romo and Nantz’s first time at the big game, either, after the duo called the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams and then the Super Bowl between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chiefs.

But after so much talk regarding how Romo acts on live television, it stands to reason there’s enough interest from social media and network executives for him to try and curtail his enthusiasm for a game he spent much of his life playing.
