The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers went into overtime during the Super Bowl, the second such instance in NFL history.

This was the first season with the league’s new overtime rules, so it was only fitting that this game went into extra time.

While the new rules provided entertainment for fans across the world, it wasn’t received well by everyone.

Tiki Barber recently appeared on WFAN Sports Radio, where he called the new rules “Absolute nonsense.”

He also said, “I understand why they do it this way because they want to be fair, but it takes all urgency out of football.”

Barber believes the clock should be a bigger part of the end of games, and that the overtime period doesn’t allow for that.

Effectively, if a playoff game does go into overtime, the game completely resets.

The score remains the same, but both teams will take as much time as necessary for a winner declared, as there cannot be a tie in the postseason.

It appears that Barber is taking a more traditional approach as to how he believes overtime should work, a stance that hasn’t been shared by other analysts.

For the most part, it seems like the majority of NFL fans and analysts are more than okay with the new rules, as it provided for a down-to-the-wire finish.

The Chiefs ended up victorious in this one, which is especially interesting considering they benefitted from the old overtime rules in an AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills.
