The Kansas City Chiefs had an unsung hero this year.
Everybody talked about Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes — and rightfully so.
However, Steve Spagnuolo may have been the real MVP of the season.
The defensive coordinator put together a masterclass in the most crucial game of the campaign, not to mention the fact that his defense was the main reason why they made it that far to begin with.
With that in mind, it’s not much of a surprise to see that the Chiefs have already signed him to a contract extension (via Ari Meirov).

The terms of the extension weren’t disclosed, but they must have given him a significant raise.
The Chiefs were lucky to make it all the way to the final game of the season.
Otherwise, multiple teams could’ve tried to lure Spagnuolo away from Missouri to give him a chance to become a head coach.
Spagnuolo made history this season.
He became the first assistant — both offensive and defensive — to win four Super Bowls.
He had already reached paydirt with his days with the New York Giants, putting together an elite defense that spoiled Tom Brady and the New England Patriots’ title aspirations.
Now, he’s been instrumental in the Chiefs’ dynasty’s success.
The Chiefs shouldn’t go through major changes on the coaching staff next season, although it wouldn’t be shocking to see them bringing Eric Bieniemy back in some sort of capacity, even if they keep Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator for a little longer.
