Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr worked under Gregg Popovich for years during his time playing for the San Antonio Spurs.

When he became an NBA coach, Kerr modeled a lot of what he did with his team after what he learned from Popovich.

Therefore, it only makes sense that Popovich congratulated Kerr for reaching 500 regular-season wins on Thursday.

“The wins, okay they’re cool. But I know what’s important to you, and that’s the family off the court and the family on the court,” Popovich said in a video shared by the Warriors on Twitter.

“Keeping it all together is more difficult than people think and you’ve done a magnificent job,” Popovich added.

“I know what’s important to you, and that’s the family and the family on the court.”

Kerr played for the Spurs from 1998 to 2001 and again from 2002 to 2003.

That was right when Popovich was totally transforming the team, leading them to their first championship wins, and really changing the way the league worked.

As you can imagine, that had quite the impact on Kerr and he was thinking about Popovich a lot years later when he was given the job of head coach for the Warriors.

Since then, Kerr has become perhaps the most successful NBA coach of the modern generation.

Under his leadership, the Warriors have claimed four championships and, like the Spurs before them, have become a dominant dynasty.

Thursday night’s game was the 500th time that Kerr secured a regular-season victory, which is a huge feat.

Popovich mentioned that keeping everything together is very difficult for an NBA coach and there is no doubt about that, especially for Kerr.

He has had his hands full this season as he’s attempted to get the Warriors back on track and into winning shape.

This message from his old friend and mentor is surely a welcome gift on such a special occasion.
