Brock Purdy has become sports’ newest Cinderella story by leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in his first full season as a starting NFL quarterback.
He was the last player chosen in the 2022 draft, and he surprised everyone by quickly becoming a high-quality signal-caller.
But after his 49ers lost in the Super Bowl by three points to the Kansas City Chiefs, many are doubting him again, and that includes Skip Bayless, who said on his podcast that he doesn’t believe Purdy can be a “top-tier Super Bowl-winning quarterback.”

Purdy threw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns while leading the NFL in passer rating and QBR in the regular season, and he showed his mettle by leading San Francisco to two come-from-behind wins against quality teams in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
He makes quick and accurate reads, he’s mobile, and he’s accurate on passes beyond 15-20 yards, not to mention cool under pressure.
But he has also been accused of being merely a decent quarterback who has massively benefitted from the talent around him and the excellent offensive mind of head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Shanahan himself now has his doubters after that Super Bowl loss, which includes Bayless.
The clock is ticking for the 49ers to win it all, especially since star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will be in the final year of his contract next season and will soon be due for a contract extension.
They’re already over the salary cap, and they may have to let go of at least one of their many stars in order to keep the rest.
