In two seasons with the Washington Commanders, quarterback Sam Howell hasn’t been that bad, and this season he threw for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns.
However, he is apparently on his way out, as the Commanders have the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft and are looking to use it on a potential franchise signal-caller.
It could mean Howell ends up getting traded in the coming months, and per Connor Hughes via Dov Kleiman, the New York Jets could be interested in him.

The Jets thought they had landed their first true franchise QB since Joe Namath when they traded for Aaron Rodgers last offseason, but Rodgers tore his Achilles during their first offensive series of the regular season.
He’s expected to return at some point in 2024, and perhaps Howell could be a solid insurance plan behind him.
Howell was a fifth-round draft pick in 2022, and he started Washington’s last regular-season game that year after they decided to move on from veteran Carson Wentz while also benching Taylor Heinicke.
New York is also in a situation where it has to plan for life after Rodgers — he’s 40 years of age, and it’s anyone’s guess how well he’ll be able to play after such a devastating injury, as well as how much longer he’ll play in the NFL.
Howell led the league with 21 interceptions in 2023 while getting sacked a league-high 65 times, but while at the University of North Carolina, he wasn’t quite as interception-prone.
Perhaps there will be multiple other teams that will be interested in trading for the 23-year-old just weeks from now.
