At one point in time, the NBA Slam Dunk Contest was one of the most anticipated events during NBA All-Star Weekend, with some of the best athletes and biggest names in the game prepared to put on a show for the fans.
From Julius Erving to Dominique Wilkins to Michael Jordan to Kobe Bryant to Dwight Howard, the Slam Dunk Contest was entertaining, with everyone anxious to see what these superstars had in store for the annual event.
Now, NBA superstars keep as far away as possible from competing in the event because they don’t want to risk injury or embarrassing themselves on the big stage.
This year, Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics was able to risk the embarrassment as he chose to enter the competition, but he didn’t do anything to move the needle with a lackluster effort, which was beaten out by Mac McClung, who has now won the event twice.
Former NFL star Brandon Marshall opened up on the I AM ATHLETE podcast about how bad the event has gotten over the years and what we all want to see moving forward.
“The dunk contest is trash,” Marshall said. “It needs to be not revamped; it needs to be owned by the superstars.”

Marshall is correct because these events with no-name players seem to be getting out of hand, especially when a G League player wins the event each year.
No one is taking anything away from McClung, as he is an incredible dunker, but people want to see superstars or notable names they root for on a nightly basis, like LeBron James, Zion Williamson, and Ja Morant.
