Back in March of 2022, Kevin Garnett witnessed a special, touching, rare moment when his jersey was retired by the Boston Celtics.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Garnett, who recently spoke about it with Paul Pierce.
Garnett admitted that he didn’t feel he had “the body of work” that many of the other retired greats before him had.
He didn’t feel like he had earned his place among the rafters, but Pierce pushed back against that thought.
If I’m being honest, I didn’t think I had the body of work to have my jersey retired by the Boston Celtics. With all those greats up in the rafters, it seemed like an impossible task. But hearing what @PaulPierce34 is saying and how the organization and fans were behind me. I… pic.twitter.com/sx1cICYgQQ

Pierce reminded Garnett that Shaquille O’Neal had his jersey retired by the Orlando Magic even though he only played with that team for four years and didn’t win a championship.
Meanwhile, Garnett was with the Celtics for six years and helped lead them to a Finals victory in 2008.
Garnett truly did so much for the Celtics during his years there, averaging 17.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.
Beyond the numbers, he became a central part of the team’s personality and desire to win.
Because of that and so much more, retiring his jersey was the right move by the Celtics.
Of course, Boston wasn’t his final destination in the NBA, and Garnett, along with Pierce, moved to the Brooklyn Nets near the end of his career.
Unfortunately, his time with the Nets wasn’t nearly as successful as his time with the Celtics.
During his 21 years in the league, Garnett impacted both the Minnesota Timberwolves and Celtics.
But it was his time with Boston that had the most success for both him and the team and that is why his jersey was retired.
He might not think he earned it like the legends before him but Garnett will forever be a Celtics icon.
