The NFL Scouting Combine starts on Monday in Indianapolis, and it is where teams head to in order to learn about the upcoming draft crop, both in terms of their physical abilities and their intangibles.
Traditionally, head coaches make the trip to the combine, but this year, not every head coach will be there.
The Dallas Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy, as well as new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, won’t be heading to Indianapolis, and McCarthy said they will be working on things while keeping tabs on what is happening at the combine remotely, per Jon Machota.
“Zim and I will have a full week together here and cover a lot of ground with things we’re working on. At the same time, we can still participate in the combine process and have direct contact through video calls and meetings, while having our coaches on the ground there as well,” he said.

This likely won’t please Cowboys fans, many of whom haven’t been happy with McCarthy.
Fans have called for him to be fired at least once, most notably after the team collapsed in the the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers last month.
They fell behind, 27-0, late in the first half and had given up 48 points early in the fourth quarter before losing by 16 points.
The Cowboys went 12-5 in the regular season and looked dominant for sizable stretches, but they also suffered some big losses to heavyweights across the NFL, including the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Buffalo Bills.
Although their roster may look similar when the 2024 season starts, they will have some big decisions to make in the near future.
Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has one year left on his contract, and they will have to give him a hefty extension, while Pro Bowl pass rusher Micah Parsons has a fifth-year option available in 2025.
But the biggest decision Dallas will need to make is regarding quarterback Dak Prescott, who could also become a free agent after the 2024 campaign.
Prescott has a habit of playing poorly in big playoff games, and it remains to be seen if they will stick with him long-term.
