The story of Paul Pierce’s 2008 “wheelchair game” has become infamous and very well-known over the years.
Now, Pierce is clearing up a very big misconception about that legendary night.
Pierce said that he definitely did not have any sort of bathroom-related incident during that fateful game.
Instead, in a video for All the Smoke Productions, Pierce claims that he was battling very serious knee pain and was forced to strap a brace to his knee before he could return to the floor.
In the years since the “wheelchair game,” many NBA fans have speculated that Pierce suffered from a very unfortunate and unflattering accident but he said that’s just a result of people spreading rumors online because they were unhappy about how well he played against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Celtics were playing the Lakers in Game 1 of the 2008 NBA Finals and Pierce was going to be a huge part of his team’s success.
In the third quarter of that game, Pierce and his teammate Kendrick Perkins slammed into each other, immediately sending Pierce to the ground in obvious distress.
He was then carted off in a wheelchair but came back after just two in-game minutes.
Following that, Pierce posted back-to-back three-pointers and helped the Celtics score a Game 1 victory.
They would eventually go on to win their 17th championship and Pierce would average 21.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.3 during that series.
The infamy around this game has grown over the years and it’s become a moment of glory for fans of the Celtics and a punchline for fans of the Lakers.
Pierce has given conflicting statements about the “wheelchair game” since retiring but these are his most definitive comments about it yet.
No matter what anyone says, Pierce claims that the “wheelchair game” was a moment he should be proud of.
