As the free agency portion of the 2024 NFL offseason quickly approaches, we’ve seen a number of teams around the league make some notable roster moves in an effort to clear cap space before the new league year begins next Wednesday.

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly made a decision that will clear almost $7 million in cap space.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers have decided to release veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson with one year still remaining on his contract.

In his contract, Peterson had a roster bonus worth $3 million that was scheduled to become fully guaranteed on March 16.

But by moving on from the veteran defensive back on Friday, Pittsburgh no longer has to pay him that $3 million, and according to Spotrac, they created an additional $6.85 million in cap space to use this offseason.

Peterson signed a two-year contract worth $14 million with the Steelers during the 2023 offseason after spending the previous two years of his NFL career as a member of the Minnesota Vikings.

In 17 games with Pittsburgh last season, he accumulated 42 tackles, 11 pass breakups, and two interceptions.

Peterson will turn 34 in July and he’s been in the league since 2011 when the Arizona Cardinals used the No. 5 overall pick on him in that year’s NFL Draft.

Will he look to continue his career in the league in 2024 or have we seen the last of the All-Pro cornerback on an NFL field?
