Former NFL GM Says Which Team Russell Wilson Should Sign With

A few years ago, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson might have been one of the most sought-after players on the free-agent market.

But after two extremely underwhelming seasons with the Denver Broncos, Wilson isn’t exactly going to be able pick wherever he would like to sign next.

He’ll likely just have to sign the best offer that’s placed in front of him, regardless of who it’s from.

Despite his struggles, Wilson has still had a small amount of interest from some teams around the NFL, including the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Well, if it were up to former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi, the Pro Bowl quarterback would sign a deal to play for the Steelers next season (via Pat McAfee on Twitter).

“If I was Russell Wilson, I would go to Pittsburgh because of how good they are defensively,” Lombardi said.

You know they’re gonna run the football with Artie Smith and they got really good skill players there” ~ @mlombardiNFL #PMSLive https://t.co/vDZ9P4LG6Q pic.twitter.com/5QXh9r2HdQ

In addition to Pittsburgh already having an outstanding defense, Lombardi also believes the team hiring Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator creates a good situation for Wilson.

When he was the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator, Smith helped resurrect the career of veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill in 2019 and 2020.

So it’s possible that the Steelers’ new offensive coordinator could do something similar with Wilson.

Lombardi’s main argument for Wilson to sign with Pittsburgh is that they are a team that the veteran signal-caller wouldn’t have to put on his back.

During the majority of his tenure with the Broncos, it felt like Wilson was really the only one who could make a play on offense.

With the Steelers, he’d get to join an offense that features guys like George Pickens, Najee Harris, Pat Freiermuth, and Diontae Johnson.

Would Pittsburgh be better off with Wilson as their starting quarterback instead of Kenny Pickett for the 2024 season?
