Friday is International Women’s Day and NBA legend Magic Johnson used it as an opportunity to celebrate one of his closest friends, Jeanie Buss.
On Twitter, Johnson recognized the Los Angeles Lakers owner, calling her “one of the most powerful women in sports.”
“After becoming the first female controlling owner to win the NBA championship in 2020 and the In-Season Tournament Championship in 2023, you have truly proven to everyone that women can be just as successful as men while running a professional team – if not more,” Johnson said in his lengthy post.
@JeanieBuss – since we were young, I knew you were destined for greatness! Your drive, determination, and winning mindset have equipped you to grow to one of the most powerful women in sports as the NBA’s first woman president and owner of the Los Angeles Lakers!

Johnson has known Buss for years.
Back when he was a member of the Lakers, Johnson witnessed Buss help her father, Dr. Jerry Buss, run the day-to-day operations of the team.
She also managed the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles, the former home of the Lakers.
As Dr. Buss grew older, Jeanie took on more responsibilities and stepped up to own the team after her father’s passing.
Buss has done a lot during her time owning the team, including helping them win the 2020 NBA championship.
Lately, she has experienced a bit of pushback from some fans, as the Lakers have struggled all season long.
Certain people believe that Buss should cut ties with head coach Darvin Ham, although inside reports have said that he has the full faith and trust of Buss and the team’s front office.
Buss has been a pioneering woman in a very male-centric league and Johnson’s post highlights that.
She has taken on a huge responsibility with perhaps the biggest NBA franchise in history and has kept them very relevant, even with all their problems.
