New York Yankees fans got some really concerning news on Monday, when it was revealed their ace, Gerrit Cole, is being sent for an MRI on his right (pitching) elbow.
The fear of an extended absence is real: normally when an MRI is scheduled in the pitching elbow area, it means the pitcher will either have to rest for a while or go under the knife.
Still, it’s too early to draw any conclusions: the Yankees will have to wait for the results of the MRI, and then come up with a plan depending on what it shows.
For now, Yankees manager Aaron Boone took some time to explain to the world exactly what Cole is feeling that forced the team to take a deeper look.
“Boone said that Gerrit Cole has been having trouble with his recovery between starts. According to Boone, Cole likened it to what he feels during the season after 100 pitches,” Yankees insider Bryan Hoch tweeted.

Pitchers know their body more than anyone, especially one who has been at the highest level for more than a decade.
If something isn’t right, they are the first to know.
Whether it’s numbness, tightness, soreness, or pain, the right thing to do is investigate what’s going on.
In this case, if something is happening that prevents his elbow from recovering as it normally should, it’s time to get some tests done.
If the Yankees were to lose a man who is capable of posting a 2.63 ERA over 209 innings like he did last year for an extended period of time, it would be a big hit to their playoff chances.
