The format of the MLB postseason changed before the start of the 2022 campaign.

Before then, there were three division winners and two Wild Card teams in each league.

Starting from 2022, the number of Wild Card clubs increased to three.

Be it two or three Wild Cards, ties can happen for the final spot, whether it be atop a division, or in any other scenario that requires seeding.

The 2024 MLB season is less than a week old, yet the New York Yankees already achieved something important with an eye on a potential postseason scenario.

“The Yankees have already clinched the playoff seeding tiebreaker over the Astros,” Talkin’ Yanks tweeted.

How can that be possible?

Well, by winning the season series.

New York swept the four games that were played over the weekend at Minute Maid Park.

The season series has only three more games remaining, set to be played at Yankee Stadium from May 7 to May 9.

Even if the Astros sweep that series in New York, they would be down 4-3 in the season matchup between the two teams.

In other words, the Yanks have secured more wins in games between each other.

There weren’t any blowouts, but the Yankees used clutch hitting, an excellent bullpen, and even superb defense to earn four close wins this past weekend in Houston.

The team morale is at an all-time high, which is awfully important at this time of the year in which they need to accumulate as many wins as they can without their ace, Gerrit Cole.
