For decades, the Dallas Cowboys have been an institution in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and they have had as large a regional following as any pro sports team.
In fact, nationwide, the Cowboys have been one of pro sports’ most iconic teams, and they have been lumped in with the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Yankees as one of the winningest franchises ever.
Therefore, it seems shocking to hear Eric Johnson, the mayor of Dallas, say that he’s rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs to return to his city, per Dov Kleiman.

The Chiefs began play in 1960 as the Dallas Texans of the now-defunct American Football League (AFL), and in fact, they won the league title during the 1962 season while being coached by Hank Stram, a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Stram remained on board when they moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs in 1963, and in 1970, they joined the NFL when the AFL-NFL merger was completed.
The year before they moved to the NFL, they won the Super Bowl in the final year that the big game pitted the two leagues against each other.
Of course, the Chiefs are now the NFL’s reigning dynasty, with three world championships in the last five seasons thanks to the transcendent play of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
As Kleiman pointed out, Jackson County voters rejected a proposition that would’ve funded stadium projects for both the Chiefs and MLB’s Kansas City Royals.
While Kleiman said there’s now a real chance both teams will eventually move, it’s hard to imagine the NFL’s best team and its best quarterback abandoning its devoted fans in the region.
