After six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins decided to begin a new journey in his NFL career this offseason when he signed a multi-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons.
After officially joining the Falcons, the next most important thing for Cousins to figure out was, obviously, which number he will be wearing on his jersey when he takes the field for his new team next season.
The veteran quarterback has worn the No. 8 since 2014, however, tight end Kyle Pitts has worn the No. 8 on his jersey for the past three seasons with the Atlanta.
Pitts was apparently willing to give up his jersey number to Cousins, but during a recent appearance on “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” the former Vikings signal-caller revealed why he didn’t end up taking the tight end up on his offer (via Dov Kleiman on Twitter).

Cousins shared that if Pitts was going to give up the No. 8 to the quarterback and switch his jersey number for the 2024 season, the NFL was going to make them buy all of his No. 8 jerseys that have already been produced for purchase.
That would have cost “several hundred thousand [dollars],” according to Cousins.
So the newly formed offensive duo decided to hold onto their money and Pitts will keep the No. 8 on his jersey for next season, while Cousins will make his Falcons debut in 2024 with the No. 18 on his jersey.
If all goes well, Atlanta is hoping that Cousins and Pitts are able to help the franchise return to the playoffs next season for the first time since 2017.
