Not so long ago, the Atlanta Hawks looked like a team on the rise.

They even reached the Eastern Conference Finals, and it seemed like it was a matter of time before they became a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference.

Fast forward to today, and that’s no longer the case.

Of course, having Trae Young missing some time with an injury doesn’t help, but that doesn’t seem to be the reason here.

As pointed out by StatMuse (via Courtside Buzz), the Hawks actually have a .500 winning percentage when Trae Young or Dejounte Murray play without each other and just .417 when they play together.

Atlanta Hawks’ win percentage this season:

.500 — Dejounte without Trae
.500 — Trae without Dejounte
.417 — When they play together

On paper, the Murray-Young pairing was a perfect backcourt.

One could cancel the other’s flaws, with both of them being complementary and bringing different stuff to the table.

That hasn’t really shown on the court, and while they’re both able to put up big numbers when they’re together, it’s all about winning basketball games.

Notably, they’re both young and should draw plenty of attention in the trade market, should it come down to that.

Still, the Hawks need to make sure they have the right guy to keep building their roster around.

You never want to trade the wrong guy and stay stuck in this position where they’re not bad enough to tank or good enough to compete.
