Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs just finished his first season in the NBA and it was a truly historic one.
As noted by StatMuse, Wembanyama’s rookie season featured him averaging 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game.
That’s the most blocks by a rookie in the 21st century and makes him the first rookie with 300+ blocks and steals since Shaquille O’Neal.
This is the first season with 250+ blocks and 100+ three-pointers.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, Wembanyama also earned the first 5×5 by a rookie in more than 20 seasons.
In other words, Wembanyama lived up to expectations – and then some.
Wemby’s historic ROTY season:
— 21/11/4b
— Most blocks by a rookie in the 21st century
— First rookie with 300+ stocks since Shaq
— First season with 250+ BLK and 100+ 3P
— First 5×5 by a rookie in 20+ seasons

Online, people were once again floored by these numbers from the Spurs star.
“Best rookie of all time,” one fan said.
While that might sound like hyperbole to some, an argument could be made that Wembanyama just had the best rookie season of all time.
And the fact that this might end up being the worst season of his career makes the future even more exciting for Wembanyama.

Might be the first player where there is no defensive game plan you can use on him

Others said that Wembanyama should be this season’s Defensive Player of the Year.
It’s unlikely he will win it this time because that honor will likely be given to Rudy Gobert.
But it’s only a matter of time before that trophy is Wembanyama’s.

No matter what awards he wins this season, Wembanyama has had a statement season and has given everyone a reason to believe in a very bright future for him, the Spurs, and the rest of the NBA.
