The NFL Draft is just around the corner, and just like it happens every year, that means someone is going to make a big mistake.

Every offseason, a team reaches to get a prospect that doesn’t turn out to be as good as expected.

And while scouts and executives seem to be in love with him right now, that could be the case with J.J. McCarthy.

At least, that’s how NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. feels right now.

Talking on ESPN’s Get Up, he stated that McCarthy is, according to his rankings, the 15th-best player in this class.

He believes that as much as he made some big plays with his arm and his feet when his team needed it, he doesn’t think Michigan would’ve fared any differently with, say, Drake Maye behind center.

Of course, he also adds that he absolutely thinks McCarthy will be taken in the top five because that’s the way it’s mocked to happen, but that doesn’t mean he’s the fifth-best player in the game.

Kiper Jr. stated that some teams often reach because of the player’s position, but the fact that he’s a quarterback shouldn’t mean a team should look to move up ten spots to get him.

It happens.

Value matters and that’s the most valuable position in the game.

Also, with so many teams looking to get a quarterback, it only makes sense that his value goes up.

Now, it’ll be up to McCarthy to prove him right or wrong on the field.
