The Toronto Raptors will have an open roster spot for next season.
Michael Porter Jr.’s brother, Jontay Porter, was officially given a lifetime ban from the NBA.
This was in the wake of his gambling-related scandal, as the league’s investigation concluded that he was guilty of what Commissioner Adam Silver had called “a cardinal sin.”
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the league’s investigation found that the Raptors’ big man had disclosed “confidential information” to sports bettors.
NBA investigation found that prior to March 20 game, Porter disclosed confidential information about his health to an NBA bettor. Another person connected to Porter placed an $80K parlay to win $1.1 million wagering Porter would underperform. The bet ultimately was frozen. https://t.co/d2CFaJ9vR0

The league statement adds that he “limited his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes and betting on NBA games.”
Apparently, he placed 13 bets on NBA games using an associate’s account from January to March.
The league’s investigation also found that prior to March 20, Porter disclosed confidential information about his health to a sports bettor, with another person connected to him placing an $80,000 parlay to win $1.1 million wagering Porter would underperform according to the prop bets.
The bet was ultimately frozen, and it led to this investigation.
Charania also reports that Porter got a total payout of $76,059 on the 13 bets he placed on NBA games, resulting in net winnings of $21,965.
Moreover, three of the bets were multi-game parlay bets that included one Raptors game, with Porter betting that his team would lose.
Of course, it wasn’t surprising to see the league trying to make a statement and an example out of him.
Then again, they’re also promoting sports gambling by even incorporating sportsbooks into their official game-streaming app, so this was due to get out of hand at some point.
