Will he stay or will he go?

Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers have been asking that question about Donovan Mitchell all season long, afraid that the star player is going to cut ties with the team and head to another in the upcoming offseason.

Even with the Cavaliers poised to enter the playoffs this weekend, the questions about Mitchell continue to swirl.

According to one anonymous NBA executive, there is a realistic shot of Mitchell leaving the Cavaliers this summer.

Speaking to The Athletic, per NBACentral, the executive said:

“That (Mitchell situation) is very real. Teams will definitely clear out a bunch of (assets) for him. We’ll see. But if they face Boston in the second round, they’ll probably lose. And yeah, that doesn’t bode well (for his future in Cleveland).”

The Cavaliers are the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, which could lead some people to assume Mitchell would want to remain in Cleveland in the seasons ahead.

But their standing in the East doesn’t represent the full picture for the Cavaliers, who have faced a ton of problems all year long.

Injuries, disappointing losses, and a tough conference have made 2023-24 a very challenging season.

Throughout it all, speculation about Mitchell has raged on.

Will he stick around in Cleveland next year or move to another team in order to win his first championship?

As the executive said, a number of teams would jump at the chance to sign Mitchell and he would instantly become one of the hottest commodities on the NBA market.

The chances of him wanting to leave the Cavaliers will be even higher if the team loses early in the postseason.

If the Cavaliers enjoy a strong and long run through the playoffs, Mitchell might elect to stick around.

But if not, he could be packing his bags as soon as the season ends.
