The Atlanta Falcons needed more than just a new quarterback; they also needed a leader.
Landing a proven veteran can help an organization raise the bar and set a new standard, and that’s what they’re doing with Kirk Cousins.
Recently, GM Terry Fontenot raved about Cousins’ habits, calling him “a nerd” for how he’s getting so involved and excited about getting to work with HC Raheem Morris, taking notes, and leading by example (via Around the NFL):
“He’s like a nerd up there,” Fontenot said. “He’s obsessed with it.”

Cousins is coming off one of the best — if not the best — seasons of his career, and he’s a seasoned veteran already at 35 years of age.
That’s why his desire to keep learning and getting better should do wonders for a young team that has lacked a winning aura and culture for quite a while now.
The Falcons hope that those good habits will be contagious and that everybody else will be as obsessed with the game as their new quarterback.
They have more than enough talent on their roster to be a legitimate force in the NFC South, even if Cousins is unable to take the field to start the season as he continues to work his way back from a season-ending injury.
And even if he’s not able to stay there for long because of his age, he’s planting a seed and helping build and develop a winning culture within the organization.
That kind of impact is definitely worth the big financial investment they made to get him, even if it doesn’t reflect on the scoreboard.
