There was buzz heading into the start of the NFL draft that the New York Giants wanted to move on from starting quarterback Daniel Jones and that they were interested in University of Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy.

But they surprised some people when they took wide receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 6 pick on Thursday.

Giants fans seem divided on the pick, but team legend Tiki Barber likes the pick, and he feels the Giants are building a competitive team in a coherent way, per WFAN Sports Radio.

Why was @TikiBarber right about Giants JJ McCarthy interest being a smokescreen? “You could tell that they’re trying to build something that could win now, and to me, the only way to do that is by relying on a veteran QB that you believe in.” pic.twitter.com/G3DAUcgki7

Barber added that Nabers can be a great player at the next level because of his speed, and that speed seems to be an emphasis for New York in their recent player moves.

As the former star running back pointed out, New York has improved their offensive line, and now they have given Jones the tools he needs to thrive as much as he can.

Nabers led everyone in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) with 1,569 yards last season, and he also scored 14 touchdowns in 2023 for Louisiana State University.

While Daniels’ production in his five pro seasons has been very anemic, some have perhaps felt that he hasn’t produced because he hasn’t had a legitimate wide receiver threat lining up alongside him.

Now he will have that in Nabers, who is a speed threat and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds during the NFL Scouting Combine.

If Jones still has even a shred of ability to become a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback, now is his chance to become just that.
